Receiving Canadian Interac payments in the US

In the summer of 2026 we took a two week trip to Canada including stays in Montréal, Toronto, and the Atlantic coast of New Brunswick. The house we rented in New Brunswick did not accept credit cards and instead asked to be paid using the Canadian Interac system, which ties an email address to a Canadian bank account.

We've used wise.com to send payments in Europe for some time, and fortunately Wise also supports Interac. Sending money was straightforward: transfer funds from a US bank account in US dollars, convert the currency to CAD, and Send.

However we also paid a damage deposit which was to be returned to us after the rental using Interac. Though Wise explains how to receive Interac, on the wise.com web site my CAD Account showed no settings for Interac. Comments on Reddit imply that this option is only available when one resides within Canada, perhaps connecting from an IP address which geoIP locates in Canada or maybe only for CAD accounts created before a certain date several years ago.

However, the Android app still works to set up Interac. You must establish a bank account in Canadian dollars first. Even converting currency to CAD is sufficient for Wise to set up your account at the Peoples Trust bank in Canada. You then use the Android app to enter an email address — which is not required to be the same email address as is tied to your wise.com account — and you receive a confirmation email from Interac with a confirmation link to click on. A short time later you receive an email from Wise confirming that Interac has been configured.

That's it. We received the refund of the deplosit after our trip, and within Wise converted the CAD to USD.
